Stone Carving
A great new course for Bradgate Manor which will be presented by Claire Mason.
Two-day courses starting each day at 9.30 am and finishing at 4 pm
Course fee £90 to include lunch and refreshments throughout the two days
Course 1 - Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July
Course 2 - Saturday 9th and Sunday10th August
Course 3 - Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September
This is a “taster” course, for those who wish to try their hands at stone carving, or to improve their basic skills. The price includes equipment, materials, protective clothing as well as refreshments throughout the day and a light, rustic lunch.
The course will be led by Claire Mason, an experienced stone carver, who regularly attends, exhibits and demonstrates stone carving techniques at the Square and Compass and the Bankers’ Arms in Dorset. Claire enjoys creating beautiful and useful items from stone and her enthusiasm for her craft is evident in the sculptures and other work that she produces.
The lessons will take place in the field at Bradgate Manor, surrounded by woodland, with W.C. and hand-washing facilities close by. Shelter will be provided in the event of bad weather.
The class groups will be small so that Claire can give individual attention to each person. During the course you will each be provided with a set of chisels, a banker (carving stand) and, of course, stone upon which to work; as well as protective goggles, face masks and aprons. The aim will be to teach techniques and to progress so that all participants have something they have made to take home with them, such as a low relief carving, a small sculpture, or your house name carved in stone.
You will need to wear suitable clothing, i.e. something that you don’t mind getting dusty. You may also want to bring sun hats and sun cream.
In recent years Claire has been working in the grounds of Bradgate Manor, where she has worked on unique sculptures, gifts, trophies, and head stones. Claire provides a bespoke stone-carving service and will be pleased to explore ideas for commissions, which be be tailor-made to your own specifications. Details of her new website will shortly be available.
