Gardening Workshops

Led by horticultural consultant, Phillip Jeffs, these stand-alone workshops will appeal to experienced gardeners, as well as to those who are just starting out and will help to increase understanding of the various topics. The workshops will be interactive with questions welcomed and advice given on your own gardening challenges.

Each workshop will commence with a welcoming hot or cold drink and there will be refreshments during the mid-class break. The Design your own Border class also includes a light lunch.  There will be a mix of classroom and practical work and you should have clothing suitable for indoors and out of doors.

Raising New Plants

Wednesday 16th July 10 am - 12.30 pm

Cost £25 to include light refreshments

Plant propagation of trees, shrubs and perennials. Lots of practical advice which will encourage you to be confident in methods of propagation and increase your stocks of plants.  Learn when and how to propagate to achieve the best results. This is an inspriational class, designed to teach you how to improve your stock of plants at little or no cost, other than your time.  Learn how to take cuttings successfully and about seed collection and correct methods of sowing seeds, division of plants and grafting.

Wildlife and Water in the Garden

Wednesday 10th September 10 am - 12.30 pm

Cost £25, to include refreshments

A further look at gardening practices which will attract wildlife, in all its forms, into the garden. This course is similar to the one on 27th May but this time with the emphasis on wildlife and water gardens. Horticulture Consultant and Wildlife Expert, Phil Jeffs, will provide advice and instruction about creating wildlife habitats, planting trees, shrubs and flowering plants which will provide food and shelter for insects and birds. Phil will also teach how to make a pond or water feature which will add an extra dimension to the garden structure and enhance its appearance.

Design and Create your own Border or Garden Plot

 Learn howto design your own plot or border, with consideration given to particular aspects, soil conditions and desired effects. Advice will be given on planting plans, colour schemes and suitability of plants for particular schemes. The small size of the group will ensure that students will receive help with the development of their own designs and leave with the confidence to carry them through. This will be a full day course with lunch included in the price.

Planting combinations and Successional Planting-The class will look at various planting combinations and have the opportunity to try out different combinations of colours, forms and textures.  Phil Jeffs will also lead the group in discussion of suitable plants for those situations where it is desirable to have something of interest in the borders or garden plots throughout the seasons.

Mediterranean Plants - colour for the summer and all year through. Mediterranean plants are already popular and set to become even more so as the summers get hotter and drier. Learn how to choose suitable plants to make up a new border or to incorporate into your existing garden.  Phil will give advice on how to use the old favourites to best effect and inspire you to choose some of the more unusual plants in this group.
